Kingston airs concerns over airport master plan

News

As heard on episode 46 of the Roundup, Kingston City Council is taking its concerns about proposals for Moorabbin Airport to the Federal Government, and has lodged a submission objecting to key elements of the preliminary draft master plan for the airport.

The Council is concerned that the master plan includes too much non-aviation development that would impose on nearby residents, could compromise safety, and undermine the site’s purpose as a centre for aviation.

Moorabbin Airport, just 25kms southeast of Melbourne’s CBD, is Australia’s second busiest airport with an average 295,000 movements per year.

Mayor Steve Staikos has called on the responsible Federal Minister, Barnaby Joyce, to reject the master plan until more space is set aside to future proof existing and future aviation activities, as well as add buffer zones, and correct references to the airport being located within the Urban Growth Boundary.
