VIC: Geelong council overseas trip criticised

Greater Geelong Mayor Cr Trent Sullivan

A proposal to send the Greater Geelong’s Mayor and an officer  on an overseas fact finding mission has been described as a bad look in the wake of a tough budget process.

The Geelong Advertiser has revealed the plan for Mayor Trent Sullivan and an officer to visit South Korea, Turkey, Belgium and Scotland to promote trade and investment opportunities.

The trip would occur in September at a total cost of $25,000 if approved by the Council this week.

The Advertiser quotes an unnamed source from within the council who is critical of the proposal in light of recent budget cuts and staff redundancies.

The Committee for Geelong and the local Chamber of Commerce are among those who support the trip taking place.
