Victoria’s Local Government Minister, Melissa Horne, has today moved to sack Moira Shire Council following receipt of a report from a government appointed Commission of Inquiry.

The minister introduced legislation to the Parliament seeking to remove the Council for at least five years, until local government elections scheduled for October 2028.

Ms Horne said the Commission’s report describes significant governance failures by the council and its administration, and finds that governance of council has deteriorated to the point where it can no longer effectively carry out its legislative responsibilities.

The government appointed the Commission of Inquiry last October, after municipal monitor Marg Allan identified serious concerns that the council’s leaders were not performing in their roles as expected or required, and recommending intervention to establish good governance.

The minister will appoint an interim administrator for a period of three months, followed by appointment of a panel of administrators to restore good governance prior to elections in 2028.
