VIC: New waste to energy deal for 9 Melbourne councils

This week saw a momentous announcement for the local government sector in Victoria.

A new waste-to-energy partnership was announced involving nine southeast Melbourne councils and the Maryville Mill in Gippsland.

It is set to take nearly all of the councils’ household waste away from landfill, and reduce emissions by the equivalent of removing 50,000 cars from roads each year.

And it will create 500 temporary and more than 450 permanent jobs!
