Here are some of the latest stories making news today in local government.

Cr Stuart Jame, Monash City Council

The Mayor of Monash City Council has responded to the release of the Suburban Rail Loop East ministerial assessment. Cr Stuart James said he is disappointed with the lack of commitment for the lowering of Glen Waverley Station to create an interconnected platform between the new SRL station and the existing station.

He said as a transformational project, it falls short.

The state government has appointed the board to lead the new entity charged with overseeing the $1.1B alpine sector – and there’s a strong local government connection.

Ali Wastie,
CEO Bass Coast Shire

Ali Wastie, the CEO of Bass Coast Shire Council, will chair the new Alpine Victoria board which will replace four existing alpine resort management boards and the Alpine Resorts Coordinating Council from the 1st October.

Moreland City Council has received a petition with more than 1400 signatures demanding the process for renaming the municipality be revisited. The Council last month voted to change the name to Merri-bek due to the Moreland name’s connection to a Jamaican plantation’s historical use of slave labour.

And former Logan City Councillors who were sacked following a fraud investigation in 2019 are reportedly considering pursuing compensation for the reputational damage and abuse suffered.

A review of Crime and Corruption Commission released this week has made 32 recommendations, and found flaws with the way the Logan City Council probe was handled by the commission.
