Macedon Ranges Shire elects a new Mayor

Date: 5th August 2026

Macedon Ranges Shire Council has a new Mayor, with Cr Cassy Borthwick elected to the role at an unscheduled council meeting on Tuesday 4 August.

Cr Borthwick succeeds Cr Kate Kendall, who resigned the mayoralty effective 24 July after announcing she will stand as a candidate for the seat of Macedon at the November Victorian state election. Cr Kendall will remain a councillor.

In her resignation statement, Cr Kendall said she was proud of what had been achieved over her eight months as Mayor and described the decision to pursue the state seat as one she had not made lightly, adding it was “the right time to explore this opportunity.”

Cr Borthwick said she was honoured to have the confidence of her fellow councillors, and pointed to fair leadership and transparent decision-making as her focus. Cr Daniel Young was elected Deputy Mayor.

Under the Local Government Act 2020, Victorian councils elect a Mayor annually. Cr Borthwick and Cr Young will hold their roles until the council’s next scheduled mayoral election in November, which falls in the same month as the state poll.
