Launceston’s Danny Gibson quits

Long-serving councillor and former Mayor Danny Gibson has officially resigned from the City of Launceston, ending a 15-year tenure in local government.

Gibson, who first joined the council in 2009, announced his departure this week, citing the heavy personal toll of recent months. His resignation follows a period of intense public scrutiny and controversy surrounding historical allegations, which Gibson has consistently and strenuously denied.

In a statement, Gibson reflected on his decade and a half of service, highlighting his pride in representing the community and his involvement in various local initiatives. He noted that while it was a difficult decision to step down, it was necessary for his well-being and the interests of his family.

During his time on council, Gibson served in various capacities, including a term as Mayor following the 2022 local government elections. He was known for his advocacy for the arts and community development.

City of Launceston Mayor Matthew Garwood acknowledged Gibson’s significant contribution to the city over the years, noting his passion for the region. The Tasmanian Electoral Commission will now facilitate a recount to fill the vacancy left by Gibson’s departure.
