Cr Stefan Koomen will step down as Mayor of the City of Casey from 4pm on Tuesday 18 August, after confirming his intention to contest the Victorian state election in November.

Cr Koomen announced on Friday 7 August that he intends to run in the state poll in the seat of Narre Warren South. He will continue to serve as councillor for Waratah Ward.

Under the Local Government Act 2020, announcing an intention to stand for state parliament does not require a councillor — or a mayor — to step down. Cr Koomen’s decision to relinquish the mayoralty is understood to be a personal one, made ahead of formal campaigning.

A special council meeting has been scheduled for 18 August to elect Casey’s new mayor, who will serve until the routine annual mayoral election on 17 November 2026.
