NSW: Parramatta Council to consider cancelling sponsorship deal with rugby league club

News

Parramatta City Council will hold an extraordinary meeting tonight to consider a rescission motion regarding its sponsorship deal with rugby league club, the Parramatta Eels.

The three-year strategic partnership was agreed in December, but was followed by a motion to rescind lodged by Cr Kellie Darley who told the Sydney Morning Herald the deal was pushed through as a late report without sufficient time for debate or to make an informed decision.

The deal is reported to be costing cost the Council $383K in its first year, and potentially up to $2.47M over the life of the agreement.

If the rescission motion is successful, an alternative motion is proposed seeking to cancel the sponsorship deal and for the council to continue working with the Eels on game day and finals activities in the city.

Despite opposition from some councillors and the United Services Union, it is considered unlikely that the rescission motion will be passed given the majority support from councillors in December.
