Macedon Ranges investigation closed

The formal governance review into a conduct matter involving Cr Dominic Bonanno has been officially concluded following a resolution at the latest meeting of Macedon Ranges Shire Council.

During the meeting, Council formally noted that the Local Government Inspectorate (LGI)—the state’s independent watchdog—determined the matter did not meet the statutory threshold for serious or gross misconduct. As a result, the LGI will take no further action.

In light of this advice, Council voted to determine that no further action is required on their part, effectively finalising the governance process.

The matter originated in November 2025 after Cr Bonanno publicly acknowledged to driving a Council-owned vehicle under the influence of alcohol. Cr Bonanno was mayor at the time, before stepping down and declaring he would not seek another term in the position.

In the months following, the Council conducted an internal review focusing on policy compliance and safety protocols.

The report highlighted several factors that influenced the decision to close the case:

  • Cr Bonanno issued a formal public apology.
  • The Councillor took an extended period of unpaid leave following the incident.
  • Administrative and safety-related actions were implemented by Council staff.
  • The incident remains a matter for the court system, which Council identified as the appropriate channel for traffic-related offences.

Cr Bonanno’s period of leave continues until 25th May.
