Construction of an innovative new underground automated waste collection system on the Sunshine Coast is complete and moving to the commissioning stage.
The first system of its type in Australia, the facility has been built in the new Maroochydore CBD. It will move waste and recyclables from businesses and public realm bins in the city centre through a 6.5km underground pipe network to a collection station, removing the need for collection trucks on streets.
Local Government News Roundup’s Chris Eddy spoke to Sunshine Coast Council’s Group Executive, Customer Engagement and Planning Services, James Ruprai about how the project came to be, the challenges, and the benefits to be delivered once the system is up and running later in the year.
