VIC: Whittlesea councillor election voided

News

Whittlesea City Council is down to nine councillors, after VCAT voided the result of the council’s Lalor Ward election.

The Star Weekly is reporting the outcome of an investigation into suspected vote tampering in the ward, which it says it has confirmed with the VEC.

Stevan Kozmeski was declared elected on preferences after October’s election, and it’s understood that he will contest a by-election which is yet to be set.

The decision follows the recent suspension for six months of former mayor Aidan McLindon by the Local Government Minister, Nick Staikos, which means the council has now lost two councillors in the space of a month.

Meanwhile, the VEC has announced a by-election for the vacant position on Darebin City Council, following the passing of Gaetano Greco last month.

The by-election will be held on 2nd August.
