Roundup Extra – Queensland Beef Corridors Campaign

News

Seven Mayors from Central and Western Queensland converged on Rockhampton recently to launch a campaign for the upgrade of Queensland’s Beef Corridors – a strategic supply chain of over 2,000 km of roads that are vital to continued growth of the beef industry.

The group is calling on the state and federal governments to address the missing links in the road network. The mayors represent the communities of Gladstone, Isaac, Banana, Central Highlands, Woorabinda, Barcaldine and Blackall-Tambo. They used the Beef Week event to meet with industry, state and federal government representatives to press their case for action that they say is needed to ensure their industry, worth $1.7 billion a year, can continue to grow.

The Mayor of Central Highlands Regional Council, Kerry Hayes, spoke to Local Government News Roundup about why the campaign is necessary, and how government support is vital not only for the beef industry, but also for the financial sustainability of many Queensland councils.
